TAD Section 6.3 — Primary Components and Rough Budget

1     Organization and Formatting

1.1    General (same as for other B-sheets; follow this link for easy reference)

1.2    Sheet-Specific — Making it All Fit

It’s a blank page; use it however you wish.

2     Content Presentation

This page addresses the second of the four key objectives of your PCR — to convince/persuade your PCR panel (and the SCD program director) that the project can and will be completed within the allocated/secured budget.

  • This section begins with a concise but thorough explanation of your budget. In table format, identify primary components and cost estimates for each item.
  • Costs should be broken down as either purchase price (for standard components), or (for non-standard components/systems) as material cost and manufacturing cost (internal manufacturing being far less expensive than external).
  • Provide the basis/assumptions (e.g., hourly manufacturing cost rates, manufacturing time estimates).
  • Use the following hourly cost rates:
    • $0/hr for internal student machining, fabrication, assembly, etc.
    • $40/hr for internal staff machining, fabrication, assembly, etc.
    • $90/hr for external outsourced machining, fabrication, assembly, etc.
  • Calculate total estimated costs by category (standard, custom – materials, custom – internal manufacturing, custom – external manufacturing). Use of pie charts is tempting; if you do so, make sure you do a good job so it is meaningful and not fluff.

A thorough budgetary analysis with documentation supporting that you have secured commitments to cover any needs beyond the allocated budget is critical to successfully progressing through the PCR stage gate.
